Abstract :
The study aimed at figuring out the implementation of writing skill of the eighth-grade students of SMPN Hindu 2 Sukawati through ESA Strategy with Picture Description. ESA strategy with picture description was a strategy of teaching writing in this present study. The undertaking of this research was mainly based on the preliminary study. The subjects were the eighth-grade students of SMPN Hindu 2 Sukawati, which consisted of 39 students. The design of this research was a classroom action research design. The data of this research were collected through the administration of pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The research was carried out through implementing the ESA Strategy with Picture Description in two cycles and the obtained data was analyzed quantitatively from the pre-test and post-test 1 and post-test 2; and qualitatively from the questionnaire. In addition, the researcher scored the subjects performance by using a scoring rubric based on six criteria: punctuation, mechanics, content, organization, grammar, and sentence structure. The result showed that there was a significant improvement of the subjects' skill in writing descriptive paragraph, pre-cycle (47.38) up to cycle I (68.79) then, it improved in cycle II (80.10). In addition, the questionnaire proved that the subjects' responses toward the implementation of ESA Strategy with picture description was positive during the teaching-learning process. In short, the study showed that writing skill of the eighth-grade students of SMPN Hindu 2 Sukawati in academic year 2020/2021 could be improved through ESA Strategy with Picture Description.
