Abstract :
This paper discusses the English-Indonesian translation of childrens literature represented by the animal tales collection entitled Kumpulan Dongeng Binatang. The focus is on the issues of being faithful or communicative in translating childrens literature. These two tendencies are actually parts of the categorization on methods of translation proposed by Newmark (1988) with two emphasis, i.e semantic translation and communicative translation. Specifically, this study is conducted to find out the appropriate translation method in accordance with Jobe (1996) who hypothesizes that the excessive proximity to the source text may lead to a lack of vitality or lack of readability. However, when the translator tries to create an adapted version, it is predicted that translation may contribute to the loss of text elements which mainly contain the authors intention. The analysis on being faithful and communicative in translating childrens literature is worth doing to map how the literalness and the sense of being communicative do not distort the purpose of transferring meaning as well as providing proper reading materials for children. The results of the study can be used as a translation model for children literature translation from English into Indonesian. Having done the close observation on the data source, being faithful and communicative in translation of children literature can be applied with the consideration of making the translation natural, acceptable and readable. Being faithful is conducted through semantic translation while being communicative means that translation is realized through the choice of natural expression that is intentionally made for the purpose of being as sensible as possible to be closer to the target language.
