Abstract :
UNESCO has declared several sites of the subak landscape in Bali Province as a world cultural heritage (WCH). An effort to promote these sites as an alternative tourism destination has been planned, yet there have not any further programs were developed. The aims of this paper are (1) to present the result of a student's journey in the WCH; (2) to explore the potential of a photography participatory action to connect students and community members in evaluating local environmental issues and the complex factor shaping them; (3) to enable student to voice and examining critically their perspective and understanding about the WCH issues. Since February to June 2018, 16 postgraduate and 30 undergraduate students from Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar have been engaged in working with local communities in mapping temples, museums, rice terraces and other places, that may potentially be tourism destinations around four sites of WHC: Supreme Water Temple of Pura Ulun Danu Batur and Lake Batur; Subak Landscape of the Pakerisan Watershed; Subak Landscape of Catur Angga Batukaru; and The Royal Water Temple of Pura Taman Ayun. They applied participatory photography approaches to produce articles. We analyzed these articles quantitatively and qualitatively to yield baseline data and information to support educational tourism plan and design.
