IMPROVING VOCABULARY MASTERY THROUGH WORD CHALLENGE GAME ON THE EIGHT GRADES TUDENTS OF SLUB BILINGUAL SARASWATI IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016

Abstract :
The present study is conducted to know the level of student improvement in vocabulary mastery after being taught through words challenge game at eight grade st stutudents of SLUB Bilingual Saraswati Denpasar. The study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) that consisted of 2 cycles were designed throuh planning, action, observation and reflection. The tests were used to collect quantitative data, and the questionnaires were used to collect qualitative data. It was begun with administering pre-test. The pre-test was intended to assess pre-existing vocabulary mastery of the students. The result of pre-test was 64.25. It clearly showed that the vocabulary mastery of the students was fair or not good enough. After the treatment was conducted, the result of cycle I (S1 and S2) showed the increasing mean figures of 65.75 and 74.25. The mean figure obtained by the subjects for each session in cycle I was clearly much higher than the mean score of pre-test. The grand mean of post test scores in cycle I was 70.00. It means that the score increased 5.75 point from IR to cycle I. This grand mean score of cycle I showed the obvious improvement of the students ability in vocabulary mastery. The result of data analysis of post test scores obtained by the subject under study for cycle II (S3 and S4) showed the increasing mean figures of 81.00 and 87.00. The grand mean of post test scores in cycle II was 84.00. There was a significant difference of 14.00 between grand mean of cycle I and grand mean of cycle II and increased 19.75 point from pre-test to cycle II. Whereas the proportional percentage figures of the total response of questionnaire for items A, B, C, and D were 64.06%, 30.02%, 5.92%, and 0%. It showed the subjects attitudes and motivation changed positively. Therefore, it could be concluded that the word challenge game could help the eight grade st stutudents of SLUB Bilingual Saraswati Denpasarin academic year 2015/2016 to improve their vocabulary mastery.
